It could have been so different....

Lena woke with a start. Not again. Another nightmare, another reminder of her loss...

She wiped the sweat from her forehead and got out of bed to get the glass of water that was always left on the table near her bed. She reached it, grasped it tightly in her hands, and pushed it to her lips. She gasped as she swallowed the cold water, then when it was all gone she refilled the glass. Her tears mingled with the water in the glass, and then her sweaty palms made it slide from her hands and smash on the floor. The glass shattered into a million pieces. Lena saw a million memories in the shards of glass at her feet, a million reflections of what could have been..... A pool of water lay at her feet, and she saw the reflections of the twin moons in it like a lake.

It need not have been like this....

You could have left Rhys in that prison until he had forgotten Maia....

"He chose Maia! I have to let him be happy!" Lena yelled out loud.

But are you happy?

"Who are you!" Lena screamed into the night.

She fell to her knees, and felt the blood seep as the shards of broken glass cut into her legs and hands. She looked down at her hands. They were covered in blood.

I am you, Lena.... came back the thought. I am the part of you who is full of regret. You could have married Rhys, but you let him marry Maia! You sent him off to find her! You pushed them together!

Lena shook her head. Tears were flowing down her face and she could feel the pain from her wounds digging into her soul itself.

"Stop it!" she screamed, but noone was there to listen.

As the two moons became hidden by the clouds in the night sky, Lena felt comforted by the darkness. She picked herself up off the floor and looked down at her legs. The blood from her injuries had stained her thin nightdress. She opened the double doors of her room and stepped out onto the veranda. The cool breeze of the night caressed her skin and eased her wounds, and for a moment she allowed herself to imagine the powerful figure of Rhys standing beside her....

Another tear trickled down her cheek as she opened her eyes. She reached down and and pulled the glass shards from her legs, wincing at the pain. She dropped the pieces of glass over the edge of the balcony. It started to rain, and Lena could feel all her thoughts being washed away. She hadn't slept properly since arriving back in Landen, almost a week ago.

She leaned on the wooden railing and tried to prop herself up, but to no avail. She was exhausted from crying and hurting and everything started to spin as she collapsed to the floor. Her last thoughts were of Rhys, holding her close....

And far away in the city of Cille, Rhys was having a sleepless night too....
