Game Hunter

Trophy Room 2024

Sorry but I need to first answer the one FAQ that keeps coming up for this section: These are not items I am selling. If there is anything on here I decided not to keep it's already been sold or traded by the time you're contacting me.

This section used to be about cool gaming finds at garage sales, estate sales, and thrift stores. Now it's mostly about absurd game prices I see in the wild. It might have a find or two along the way.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Gamestop is never going to sell this game

In early January I went to Woodfield Mall to try out the escape room there. It was great. I also stopped at the GameStop since it was close by. I remain completely amazed that of all the previous Electronics Boutique locations, this one has changed the least. I first visited this store in, most likely, 1992 or 1993. >30 years later it is in the exact same location, with the exact same layout. The only thing that changed is the color scheme and name above the door.

While looking at their Switch selection I noticed they had one single Wii game left. No one is ever going to buy Super Mario Galaxy 2 for $45. Good for GameStop if someone does, but they won't.

Chibi-Robo for GameCube

How are things at Half Price Books?

I used to visit Half Price Books once a week. Now it's, I dunno, every six months at the most. It's still a nice store but hasn't been the same since they discovered ebay. Someone traded-in a rare GameCube game at this particular location. Neat. I'm not expecting them to sell it at a bargain, but a cursory look online has this on the high side. Also, $250 for any game is unhinged.

Yes, I realize that in like 5 years I'll pay $250 for something called "Final Fantasy X Afterbirth Interlude Reverie Complete Edition Volume 1" because that's how game prices (and names) are going.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance CD

Pretty sure you can stream this. I get it, this is also the going rate online. On the other hand, streaming services.

Sonic 2 shirt

Vintage clothing show

In the past 2 years I've become a fan of vintage clothing shows. They happen in my area about twice a year. It's a bunch of vendors who must stalk Goodwills and estate sales for clothes they think they can flip. The prices are awful but it's fun to look. Also everyone there is super cool & friendly, you end up having dozens of conversations.

Here's someone selling a Sonic 2 t-shirt that I gave away just over 30 years ago. Not that specific shirt, but maybe. I believe it was a pre-order bonus, but might have been a giveaway at launch. I don't recall for sure. Pre-orders weren't as common then so if our store got 20 of those shirts we gave them to the first 20 people who bought the game, pre-order or not. This previously free item is now being sold for low 3 figures.

$75 Super Nintendo

Some vendors carry other retro items beyond clothes. The sightings are sparse but interesting. Here's someone asking $75 for a Super Nintendo with two controllers, one off-brand (Acclaim I believe). That's a far cry from what you'd find them for when I started this section.

The last update to this page was early 2024. Who knows what the rest of the year will bring.
