The Complete Guide to Phantasy Star III

Bugs & Glitches

This page contains many plot spoilers. If you haven't completed the game yet you may want to save this for later.

Ayn & Thea's Marriage

"Ayn asked Thea to be his wife and she accepted. Lyle and Rhys gave their blessings as well." That was very generous of Lyle, especially considering he's quite dead at this point in the game. Yup, just moments ago "Lyle bid farewell to Thea and then he died."

Lyle, what a neat guy.

By the way, is anybody else troubled by Ayn & Thea being cousins when they marry? Really, they are. Maia is the daughter of the King of Cille, the King of Cille refers to Lyle as his nephew, therefore Maia and Lyle are cousins. Ayn is the son of Maia, Thea is the daughter of Lyle, therefore they're second cousins. It's not a direct blood relation, but it's still a wee bit unsettling. I do understand that perhaps in Japan this does not have the same stigma as in the US.

Then again, there are only about fifty people between all seven planets so I guess there's a pretty small dating pool to choose from in the first place. Besides, Sean is my favorite third generation character so I won't complain too much.

Lune Forbids It!

"That's nice, who the hell's Lune?"
If Ayn tries to travel from Aquatica back to Landen he's stopped by one of Lune's soldiers who tells him "You cannot enter. Lune forbids it!" Who's Lune and why the hell is he blocking this tunnel? Unless you've already played Nial's quest you have no way of knowing.

Blocked Caves

A total of four passages in the game can not be entered at all. They are all the passages leading to/from Terminus, Elysium-Aridia, Frigidia-Elysium, and Draconia-Aquatica. Of course, by the time you need to travel to Terminus you have Laya's Pendant so it's not a major problem. However, the Elysium-Aridia cavern would have been useful in Nial's quest as would the Draconia-Aquatica in Ayn's.

This was tested with each third generation party. Click here for a giant picture of all blocked caves (251 KB)

Laya's Equipment

Two Mystery Stars and Pendants
At the end of Nial's quest give all of Laya's equipment to Wren or Mieu. If you marry Alair you will start Aron's quest with two Mystery Stars and two Laya Pendants.

Normally a smart move..

The wise King offers you some more sound advice
Start a new game. Go to the supply shop and sell your boots, you'll get 50 meseta for them. Use that money to buy an escapipe. Now go to the castle to marry Maia. Once you're thrown in the dungeon use the escapipe (must be done before Lena frees you). You'll end up by the entrance the guards brought you in through. Exit the dungeon, talk to the King and.. viola, there's the message.

Stuck in town
The King's right, the game is pretty much over now. The old man is still blocking the way out of town. You're free to wander anywhere around the town, castle, and dungeon. Unfortunately, there's nothing around that will help you leave. Unless you can trimate the old man at the entrance into submission of course.

The happy couple is reunited!
Luckily, it looks like you don't need to leave town after all. Maia has been safely returned to the castle. No need to go messing around with the moons and accidentally awaking evil. Sure, Ayn's quest will be excessively dull but he's a smart guy, maybe he'll find something to do.

There is a way to use this trick to your advantage though (thanks to Raithwall for discovering this):

Before talking to Lena
When Lena arrives walk near the edge of the gate. You want to be as far away as possible while still being able to talk.

After talking to Lena
During the dialog with Lena press and hold UP on the controller. Don't stop until the next dialog is complete. When she leaves Rhys will be stuck in cell again. The gate is open but you can't get through. Use the escapipe and you'll be free to loot the dungeon.

Rhys is free to pass
Unlike the previous example, the town exit is no longer blocked.

If those screen shots aren't enough.. head over to the download page to grab a Genecyst save state that demos this trick.

The NES game "Tombs & Treasure" (by Falcom) had a very similar message telling the player to "Press the reset button now" if they did a certain puzzle in the wrong order.

Another escapipe bug

Submitted by Derrill Dabkoski:

There's another escapipe bug that can be used to skip the entire 2nd generation and drastically shorten the 3rd.

Nial in Cille dungeon
In Rhys' quest, before going to fight the King of Cille, make sure Mieu or Wren have an escapipe. After defeating the king choose to marry Lena. You will start Nial's quest back in Landen castle. Immediately use the escapipe, you will be teleported back to the entrance of Cille dungeon.

[download a Genecyst save state at this point]

Make your way back through the dungeon. You'll only have to fight chirpers. The King of Cille will still be at the throne with Maia (who's sporting a new look). Fight him again and you'll be asked to marry Laya or Alair, choose Alair or the game can't be continued.

Nial meeting the King of Cille
Aron starts with the sub parts and Laya's Pendant but they don't work. One thing I learned from creating the hacking section is that possessing one of the key items does not make it usable. An event flag has to be set as well. What this means is Aron will have to go back and get the sub parts again, as well as find Laya and activate the Laya Pendant. Oh well, it still shaves a lot of time off the game.

This bug won't work if you choose Laya because Gwyn starts in your group so it's not possible to "find" Laya making it impossible to finish the game.

This bug is also used in a tool-assisted speedrun that clocks in under 1:40. On an actual game cartridge it's still difficult to get under the five hour mark

Adan in Azura dungeon
This bug can be used to shave some time off Adan's quest. After beating Nial's quest (the long way), Adan will start in Landen castle. Use an escapipe and the party will be teleported back to Azura where they can pick up the aero parts for Wren.

This bug isn't useful for the other generations. For Ayn, it takes him back to Cille dungeon which is about 10 seconds from where he starts. Sean & Crys are teleported back to Techna dungeon; without the aero or aqua parts they will be stranded on the island. Aron is teleported to Azura dungeon which is 2 feet from where he starts.

Pron Glitch

Best glitch name ever, found by Bryan Stewart (aka SkieFyre, Ragn_Charran) and Mr2 while creating the Phantasy Star III Solo-Hero Challenge FAQ:

"While transforming the Legendary weapons to Nei weapons, you can exploit a
glitch in the game code to drastically increase the speed and defense
statistics of members in your party!

To activate the glitch, remove all items from any party member whose stats you
want affected by the main effect. Unequipping is not enough, the item list for
that person must be empty. Then speak to the old man who says "Nei is the word
of ultimate power", triggering the weapon transformation. "

MAIN EFFECT

The speed, damage, and defense statistics of affected members will change.

[...]

SIDE EFFECTS

[...] 4. Characters will be renamed (Permanent). Many characters will have letters in their name changed, normally having a P replace the first letter. [...] And yes, Aron being renamed to Pron, which is in turn very similar to Pr0n, is why we called this the Pron glitch."

Read the Phantasy Star III Solo-Hero Challenge FAQ for detailed information on this glitch.

Series Continuity

Aron's ending it the only one that truly fits into the Phantasy Star timeline. Without completely spoiling the ending to Phantasy Star II, it is learned during PSII that the entire PS storyline occurred well after the destruction of Earth. The PSIII either begins immediately after PSII or 1,000 years after PSII (thanks to inconsistent Sega translations) therefore PSIII also must occur after Earth's demise. Again, without spoiling PSII, Aron's trip through a black hole and backwards in time pieces the entire series together nicely. Go check out the PS Timeline at phantasy-star.net [archived version] for a better explanation of this theory.

Adan's and Crys' ending are basically the same. The heroes defeat Dark Force and then head for Earth. Well, according to PSII they won't find anything there.. and will probably end up wandering for another 1,000 years.

Sean's ending is the only one that doesn't involve a close encounter with Earth. Instead, the Alisa III and the Neo Palm seem to form an alliance. Over on the Neo Palm they know all about Dark Force.. did they just fight off Dark force on their ship too? Overall, Sean's allows the most room for a sequel - even if it leaves a gap in the larger PS picture.

Climate

Regardless of the planetary climate, all the towns are remarkably green. Even on Aridia, a desert planet inhabited by cyborgs, the only town is quite fertile.. what the heck do cyborgs need plants for anyway?
